The Recreation Dog Park Association was established in 1995 as a non-profit organization to raise funds through member donations to maintain and improve the dog park at Recreation Park and the off leash dog zone at the beach.

These are public parks, so you don't have to be a member of the association to use them, but it is up to those of us who use these facilities to fund the improvements. Any donation that you make will help, and is always much appreciated! Remember, your donation may be used for your taxes, so don't forget to print a receipt.

The importance of exercise for your dog!

Just like proper training and balance diet, exercising your dog is another important aspect of caring for your dog’s all-round health and happiness. Exercising regularly with your dog not only help you to develop a bond of closeness between you and your dog, It also help keep your dog fit, healthy and provide the necessary mental stimulation for him.

To keep your dog fit, exercise is very important. Ideally, your dog should have at least 2-3 walks a day. One of which must be at least 30 minutes. If possible, allow your dog to run off leash for some time. He’ll benefit from the freedom to explore and could cover 3-4 times more ground than what you could with him on a leash. If you got a sporty dog on hand, exercise is even more important as they tend to turn restless more easily without ample exercise.

Take note that different dog breed need different amount of exercises. While toy breed dogs like Chihuahua require lesser exercises, sporting breed like Retriever require much more exercises on a regular basis. You might want to check out with your breeder on this issue.

Most veterinarians will caution pet owners not to exercise a dog right after feeding him. This is certainly true of strenuous exercise, which can make a dog throw up and can lead to gastric torsion. A recent study by the Divisions of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University proved that exercise after eating seems to burn up more calories by raising the body's rate of metabolism.

After eating, many dogs will lie down to digest their food. While sleeping a pet will burn up a few calories in just keeping his heart and lungs going. This sluggish behavior can only encourage the animal to put on weight and to put on fat. It now makes sense to take your dog for a walk not more than a half-hour after his big meal of the day. This very gentle exercise will also stimulate his digestion. Then after a few hours have gone by, you can put him through a more demanding regimen of activity.
